Fast Start, Minimal Gains

September 19th, 2009 | by Ryan John Estorninos |

Redskins@Giants Highlights (via NFL Network)

Imagine this sequence: 1st down, Portis, hand-off, left side, 34 yards, 1st down in Giant territory.  I was ready to call it: We got this!  The next play in the series was a busted reverse/option that lead to what so many of us fans have been accustomed to seeing the last several seasons.  We saw the fake field goal, touchdown by Hunter Smith, and we saw a hurry up touchdown in garbage time, but did that show us anything?

What is it we the fans are looking for?  What is it we want to see from our beloved home team?  We want to see the potential we are fully aware this team has.  Am I wearing “Homer Glasses”?  Maybe so. As a fan of this team my whole life, I would be the first to tell you that I think this team can win a Super Bowl with Shane Matthews. Okay, thats quite a stretch, but I could find a way to justify it.

We have heard it all summer, and quite frankly it has a “last song syndrome” feel to it.  On the outside, we want to see Moss and Kelly, ready to break long plays.  We want to see ARE roaming free in the slot.  We want to see the Cave Man Mike Sellers busting over feeble linemen making way for CP.  We want to see Jason go deep!  We want to see Haynesworth and company push back the line of scrimmage, and be as close and personal with opposing QBs as if he’s administering an endoscopy. We want to see Carlos Rogers catch a pick!!

Losing to the Giants was not the worst thing in the world, but we want to see more.  As we head into the Rams game , we want to see total dominance.  Is that too much to ask?  Last year the Redskins should have walked out of Fed-Ex field with heads raised high and proud, instead they walked out lowly and as if someone stole their Halloween candy.  What do I expect out of our Home Team tomorrow?  A win? Heck yea, but even more importantly I expect them to provide a statement.  A statement that says loud and clear to the entire NFL: “Let’s Play Ball”!
